Three Things I’ve Learned During My First Year as a Virtual Assistant

Three Things I’ve Learned During My First Year as a Virtual Assistant

In September 2019, I took a leap of faith. I quit my job. And that was terrifying.

I was a reporter at a construction data publication for six years, and during that time, I held almost every position. During my last three years, I worked as a national account representative for construction companies.

I was GREAT at my job. I met my daily/monthly/yearly goals by a LANDSLIDE. But I'm someone who enjoys a challenge. And that wasn't happening anymore.

So, I put in my two weeks. I didn't have a new job waiting for me, but I knew I needed a change.

Fortunately, my fiancé, Andrew (boyfriend at the time), supported my decision. He knew I was drained and needed a break. He quit his 9-5 the year before to work for himself, and the plan was always for me to do it next.

During October, I practiced new skills. I worked on my mental health. I pet-sit for friends and family. I took on a few small projects through UpWork and Indeed.

I knew I wanted to become a virtual assistant, so I updated my LinkedIn and started looking for work.

In mid-November, Andrew called me excitedly. "I think I know someone who needs a VA!"

Andrew's family owned a restaurant and bar for most of his adolescence and early adulthood. One of his former coworkers, who now works as a copywriter, searched for a VA on LinkedIn, and I came up in his LinkedIn search because we shared a mutual connection.

After exchanging a few emails and speaking on the phone to discuss his needs and how I could help, we decided to move forward, and I signed a contract.

I couldn't believe it. I had my FIRST client as a virtual assistant. It was just as terrifying as putting in my two weeks' notice.

That was almost one year ago.

In the past 11 months, I've learned so much about myself, my work ethic, and running my own business.

These are the top three things I've learned in my first year as a virtual assistant that you can use, too.

1. Don't be afraid to put yourself out there.

You're never going to get anywhere if you don't put yourself out there. Even if you don't have a plan, do it (yes, like Nike.)

If I hadn't updated my LinkedIn bio to show that I was a virtual assistant, I would have never gotten my first client.

Take the plunge and do that thing you keep thinking about! Stop procrastinated and start your next great idea.

2. Be open to new opportunities.

I've had several other projects through my VA client, including freelance writing and working on podcasts. Each one started with me thinking: I've never done this.

But guess what? Now I have. So, the next time a similar project or client comes around, I can use that past experience.

You'll never know what you do and don't like if you don't give new opportunities a chance.

3. Never stop learning.

Read blogs, connect with other freelancers, sign up for webinars, buy courses (or find free ones.) There are SO many available resources online; I promise you can learn how to do anything.

I've signed up for many Zoom calls, connected with people on LinkedIn, joined free Facebook groups for other freelancers or virtual assistants, and more.

Make a goal to learn one new thing every day. Before you know it, you'll have learned a whole new skill.

I'm so happy I decided to become a virtual assistant.

Every day is a new adventure.

In the past year, I've learned I can do anything I put my mind to, even if it takes a little time. I can't wait to see what I learn in the next year, in five years, and ten years down the road.

Do you or someone you know need a virtual assistant? Send me a message, and let's see how we can work together!
